UN Convention on The Rights Of a Child.

My idea of what 'The UN Convention on the rights of the child' means

The idea of the convention is to get the message across to adults and children that children are to be treated as individuals. They are not just to be treated as objects that you can treat as you like.

Welfare
Article 3

Courts of law, social workers, lawmakers etc have to do what the child needs and wants, if it is in their interests.

Parental role
Article 5

The government or its representatives are to respect the parents/guardian’s ideas of how to bring the child up, as long as it’s not harming for the child.

Right to Life
Article 6

The government or its representatives are to ensure that children can develop into the person they want to be and have a right to live.

Nationality
Article 7

Children have a right to a name and nationality and if it’s in their best interests, to grow up with their parents.

Identity
Article 8

The government or its representatives respects the right for children to keep their name, nationality and family relations.

Family Life
Article 9

The government or its representatives should make sure that a child will live with parents unless that the child’s safety is in jeopardy.

Where the child doesn’t live with their parents the government or its representatives ensures that they keep in contact unless it isn’t in the child’s best interests.

Child’s wishes
Article 12

The government or its representatives should ensure the child can speak their opinion and that they are listened to.

Freedom of expression
Article 13

Children have the right to express themselves through any medium and also to obtain any information.

Freedom of thought
Article 14

Children have the right to think what they like.

Freedom of association
Article 15

The government or its representatives respects the rights of children to meet with other children in a peaceful manner.

Privacy
Article 16

Every child has the right to privacy in the home, with the family and towards their paperwork, including diaries and letters. People don’t have the right to barge in without permission, or to talk about you in an untruthful way.

Access to information
Article 17

Children have the right to access any information from Britain and other countries through newspapers, books, internet, television or any other source, especially those aimed at their well being.

Parental support
Article18

The government or its representatives admit that the parents have joint responsibilities for the child’s upbringing and welfare.

Protection from Abuse
Article 19

The government or its representatives will make sure that country has laws to protect children from all forms of abuse.

Health
Article24

The government or its representatives will try to guarantee that children get health care.

Right to Education
Article 28

The government or its representatives recognise the fact that children have a right to education.

Employment
Article 32

The government or its representatives ensure that any work children do, will not be harmful to them in any way and they will get fair wages.

Child victims
Article 39

The government or its representatives promise to help a child recover in all positive ways from any form of injustice, either physical or mental, towards the child.
