About the Gnarly
Throughout the summer the splash team have been contacting young people from the Rhydwen drive estate offering them a variety of activities. The scheme finished with a three-day camp at Llyn Gwynant, just below Snowdon.

13 young people aged between 14 and 17 tookpart in the camp. These young people had been involved with the workers throughout the summer, and had been on a trip to Lake Geirionydd a couple of weeks before.

In preparation for the camp the young people had prepared the menu, designed the rota (which was ignored thereafter!!!), decided on the necessary equipment, and agreed ground rules.
The campsite was lovely, in the middle of nowhere, at the base of Snowdon; it became our home for a few days. The river became our bath and swimming pool, and the portaloo - well that was the place to avoid.

During the camp the young people took part in a number of activities including a taster day at Plas-y-Brenin where they did canoeing, climbing and skiing, and all after three hours sleep. Each night we had a campfire with games and singing (mostly by the workers - all budding karaoke artists!!). From barbecues, to baked spuds, to spaghetti bolognaise - with very stodgy pasta!!
The neighbours were lovely, the camp was great fun. When can we go again?!!

The Splash Summer scheme has been fun packed this summer with over 100 young people from Rhyl getting involved. Activities have included radio production at Shore FM, Web Site in a Week project, basketball, hockey, swimming, BBQs, crazy golf, ice skating, canoeing, dry slope skiing, climbing, song writing workshops, djing, drumming, day trips to Harlech, Lake Geirionydd and Anglesey. The scheme ended with 2 camps in Llyn Gwynant where 25 young people experienced outdoor life and the bat cave. We are all still recovering!

There is still lots for young people to do in Rhyl.

The Schools Youth Work Project in Rhyl High School runs three lunchtime drop-ins a week in the school. You can come and organise projects and activities or just find a friendly face if you need to talk about ANYTHING from relationships to housing problems.

This project also runs a Clwyd Coast Credit Union Young Savers group, which encourages young people to take responsibility for the money they do have. This runs after school on a Wednesday.
Also you can look out for the youth workers on the streets as detached youth work brings the workers to a street near you one evening a week.

For information on this project please contact Talitha on 01745 343533. West Rhyl Young People's project on Bedford Street runs a sexual health clinic on Monday 4-6pm. This confidential service offers young people access to a doctor and youth workers.
Viva is a safe drop in on Thursday 5-8pm for young people who identify as being lesbian, gay or bisexual. Come along for a chat, information, advice, and free condoms or to organise and plan your own projects and activities.
