At Frongoch we learn French in Year 6. The emphasis is on oral work and every opportunity to speak will be presented to the children. The scheme used is Aprecole. Opportunities to learn about the culture will be taken and it is hoped that as many of the Year 6 children as possible will visit France to practise the skills they have learnt.

Aprecole attempts to inform about the culture of France by providing a `fact` on each of the worksheets. The target language is used for instructions which the teacher can help to explain where necessary.

The content of the scheme is as follows:

Lecon 1: Bonjour ca va?
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Respond to "ecoutez!" and "repetez!"
-Have completed their Carte d`Identite.
-Say and underdstand the following:
Bonjour, ca va, au revoir, je m apelle, j`habite a, comment t`appelles-tu?Ou habites-tu?oui, non, merci.

Lecon 2: Dans la salle de classe
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Understand "Qu`est ce que c`est?"and respond appropriately with "C`est un/e....."
-Know and be able to use the following vocabulary: un crayon, un livre, une table, une fenetre, une porte, un ballon, un chien, un chat.
-Begin to recognise that nouns can be masculine or feminine.

Lecon 3: Les nombres 1-12
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Count from numbers 1-12 inclusive.
-Understand and respond correctly to "Quel age as-tu?"
-Understand "Il y a combien de...."
-Begin to recognize that "un" and "une" are both words for "one" or "a".

Lecon 4: Au marche
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Name the following fruit; une pomme, une banane, une orange, un citron, une peche, une tomate, une poire.
-Ask for the fruit using "je voudrais" and "S`il vous plait".
-Ask how much the fruit costs using "C est combien?"
-Name the currency in France and much of Europe.
-Name the following food: le gateau, le chocolat, les bonbons, la glace.
-Consolidate their understanding of "un" and "une" being words for "one" or "a".

Lecon 5: Au supermarche
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: du pain,du fromage, du jambon, du sucre, du lait, du beurre, du poisson, du chocolat.
-Know the "du" in this case means "some".
-Use with greater confidence; je voudrais, s`il vous plait and c`est combien?

Lecon 6: Les couleurs
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the followinig terms for colours: rouge, bleu, jaune, vert, marron, noir, blanc, orange.
-Combine the above in phrases and know their meaning.

Lecon 7: Les nombres 13-21
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Count from 13-21 inclusive.
-Know and use the following vocabulary: gris, violet, rose, les petales.
-Understand that France is divided into 22 regions and in turn 96 departements.

Lecon 8: Les saisons et les mois
Objectives: At hte end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: le printemps, l ete, l automne, l hiver, janvier, fevrier, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, aout, septembre, octobre, novembre, decembre.
-Sing "Joyeux Anniversaire"
-Respond to the question, "Quand est ton anniversaire?"

Lecon 9: Les jours de la semaine
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche.
-Write the date in French. eg. le 12 juillet
-Respond correctly to the question "Quelle est la date aujourd hui?"
-Count from 1-31 inclusive.

Lecon 10: Ma famille
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: la famille, le pere/papa, la mere/maman, le grand-pere, la grand-mere, le frere, la soeur, moi, et.
-Respond correctly to the question; "As-tu des freres ou des soeurs?"-(Oui, j`ai un frere et une soeur etc...)
-Begin to realise that there are two words for "you" in French: "Tu" and "vous".

Lecon 11: Dans la maison
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: la maison, le salon, la cuisine, la chambre, la salle de bains, le garage, le jardin, le lit, la television, le canape, la cuisiniere, la douche, la baignoire.
-Match the correct names ot the furniture to the different French room names.

Lecon 12: En ville
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and understand the following vocabulary: la ville, la boulangerie, le supermarche, la charcuterie, la boucherie, le cafe, la pharmacie, l epicerie, la banque, la Poste, la patisserie, les chips, la tarte aux pommes.
-Begin to understand that there is more than one word for "the" in French: "le" and "la", (also "les"). See Support Materials Book.

Lecon 13: Directions
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Ask for directions using "Excusez-moi", "Ou est...?"
-Give directions using "Allez tout droit", "Tournez a gauche/droite".
-know and use the following vocabulary: le gendarme, l ecole, l eglise.

Lecon 14: Ou est...?
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: devant, derriere, en face de, a cote de, entre.
-Use the above when giving and receiving simple directions.

Lecon 15: Au Cafe
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "l addition", "la carte", "le garcon", "s`il vous plait".
-Recognise different items on a basic menu and know how to order correctly.

Lecon 16: A la campagne et, les animaux
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "un mouton", "une vache", "un cheval", "unn cochon", "une poule", "un lapin", "un canard", "un chat", "une ferme", "un fermier".
-Differentiate between "un cheval" and "deux chevaux".
-Respond to the question "As-tu des animaux?"

Lecon 17: Quel temps fait-il?
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "il fait beau", "il fait mauvais", "il fait soleil", "il fait chaud", "il fait froid", "il fait du vent", "il neige", "il pleut".
-Ask and respond approprietly to the question: "Quel temps fait-il?".

Lecon 18: Le visage
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "la tete", "le visage", "les cheveux", "les yeux", "les dents", "la bouche", "le nez", "l oreille".
-Describe themselves. For example: "j ai les yeux bleus et les cheveux noirs."
-Begin to recognise that colours must agree with the noun (maculine and feminine).

Lecon 19: Le corps
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "l epaule", "la jambe", "la main", "le genou", "l estomac", "le bras", "le pied", "le dos".
-Recognise the phrase: "j ai mal..." to describe if they are feeling unwell. For example; "j ai mal a la tete", "j ai mal a l estomac", "j ai mal aux dents etc..."

Lecon 20: Les vetements
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-know and use the following vocabulary: "le manteau", "le pantalon", "la chemise", "le pullover", "la cravate", "la robe", "la jupe", "le chapeau", "les chaussures", "le garcon", "la fille".
-Use the phrase: "je porte..."
-Begin to understand that colours agree with the noun (masc/fem).

Lecon 21: J`aime/je n`aime pas
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following phrases: "j aime..., je n aime pas..., j adore...
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "le serpent", "les rats", "les carottes", "la mer", "les petits pois", "les frites".
-Describe their likes and dislikes using the French language.
-Recognise that "les" is used to express plural and also by adding`s in the cases used in this sheet.
-Understand that "il" means "he" and "elle" means "she".

Lecon 22: Les sports
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "le ski", "le golf", "le tennis", "le cricket", "le football", "la natation", "l equitation", "le cyclisme", "le patinage", "la piscine", "le club de golf", "la balle", "la batte", "le but", "le velo".
-Express which sports they like using "j aime" or "j adore".


Lecon 23: Comment vas-tu?
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "j ai faim", "j ai soif", "je suis fatigue(e)", "je suis content(e)"," je suis fache(e)", "je suis triste".
-Begin to recognise that verbs agree with the male or female carrying out the action.
-Count from 1-50 inclusives.

Lecon 24: Les actions
Objectives: At the end of this lesson the children should be able to:
-Know and use the following vocabulary: "je danse", "je travaille", "je parle", "je bois", "je chante", "je regarde", "je joue", "je mange".
-Respond correctly to questions in relation to the above.
