SUMMER TERM 2006
Matthew and Josh
JRSO REPORT 14th July 2006
When we started road safety our headmaster told us that we only had to tell pupils about the importance of road safety. But as we carried on through the terms we’ve been doing more exiting and fun things for the pupils. We think if the children need to know important information like road safety it should be taught in a fun and educational way.
The first thing we did was to ask the pupils to design a poster for a competition. We didn’t think we would have as many entries as we did. We think the things that encouraged them the most were the prizes. As we asked them over time to do more competitions, the entries got smaller. All the competitions we have done have been posters except one which was a story. All the competitions have been successful.
Even though we haven’t finished the job yet we’ve already got our reward. We went to the Faenol Fawr Hotel in Bodelwyddan with Mr. Davies, Mr. Davies’s daughter and her friend from Rhos Street School. There we had a buffet, had a go on different sorts of crazy bikes to ride. A talk from the Fire Service in Rhyl and they lifted up a van with an inflatable bag. The best bit was when we won first prize in the quiz for a yellow bus. I’m surprised we won because Mr. Davies kept giving us answers that weren’t right but he thought he was right so we tried it and they weren’t right. In the end Mr. Davies said not to listen to him anymore and we gained back points.
The yellow bus was a chance for us to go on a trip in a reasonable close area. We have been to the Brenig, we think that the children enjoyed getting soaked after a down pour and playing hide and seek in the forest the most. We are very proud of what we have done for the children and the school. Unfortunately because we’re going to high school our jobs will be gone and replaced. New road safety officers will be appointed and the information we told to the next road safety officers will be passed down to the new year three children coming up to Frongoch in September and hopefully they will learn more and pass that down as well. We are very proud to represent the school and will miss our jobs and the school in September.
Many thanks Joshua Owen and Matthew Roberts.
Thank you boys – you have been superb! You may have even saved someone’s life. Gareth Davies

Dear Parents
I am writing to you on behalf of our school’s Junior Road Safety Officers, Josh Owen and Mathew Roberts in Year 6.
This year the Walk To School Campaign (Monday 22nd May- Friday 26th May) is focusing on children’s independence and learning whilst they walk to school.
They would like to organise a Walk To School Day on Tuesday 23rd May. It is hoped that as many children as possible will walk to school on this day. As parents you should make the decision as to whether or not you are happy that your child can walk to school safely, especially if they have not yet already done so. You may wish to accompany them or as a group of parents organise a “walking bus” of children who can make the journey in a large group. Please reinforce the need to observe road safety and to make use the crossing ladies where appropriate. Please do not feel forced into choosing a walking option if you are at all uncomfortable with the idea – this is entirely voluntary. We will make a fun survey of the response on the day. Thanking you in anticipation of your support with this venture which is also aimed at improving health and fitness. (It is understood that some of you live too far away to take part fully).
Yours sincerely
Josh Owen and Mathew Roberts
